In March of 1774, Captain Juan Batista de Anza rode into the area known as Bear Gulch, and discovered a thickly wooded glade of sycamore, cottonwood and willow trees. The Spaniards sighted numerous bears so came to call the friendly oasis, Arroyo de los Osos, Bear Gulch.
